multiple bags satelliting around her

I wanted to look grown up for my first job after college. So, of course I consulted the back of Glamour magazine for the Dos and Don'ts. I had always enjoyed them and found them to be very informative. Don't wear cut off denim shorts with your undies or butt hanging out. Do wear chic sunglasses. Don't wear baggy shapeless jumpers. Do wear a smart belt. Anyway, one Don't that made a lasting impression on me was one that showed pictures of women with black bars over their eyes toting any number of bags hanging off their arms - work bag, lunch bag, gym bag, shopping bag. It said, "Don't be a bag lady." Pictured next to them was a slim, put together lady with a single bag that could do-it-all. Ever since, every morning when I leave for work I think about how to get all my stuff there without looking like a bag lady. One answer was a stupid backpack, but as someone who once dressed as the Fashion Police for Halloween and actually handed out tickets to offenders, that wasn't what I had in mind.
If you recall, last year I bought the ultimate do-it-all bag. I also paid the price when I overloaded said bag and suffered a serious backache. Sure can you can carry one bag to work when your job is posing with a purse for the back of Glamour magazine. But, come on, in real life, a career woman has a lot of stuff to carry around. Lately, I find myself cringing when I leave for work with my fabulous bag, a cheesy canvas tote bag from a conference that I use as a gym bag, my laptop bag, a small paper bag with my lunch in it, a Target bag with something I need to return on my way home from work, and a half-caff coffee. It's ridiculous, and embarrassing. I never wanted to grow up and be a Don't.

winter wonderland

Mike and I just returned from a perfect weekend in Bayfield, Wisconsin. There was a big snow storm Thursday night so when we got there on Friday afternoon everything was blanketed in fresh, powdery snow. Saturday we cross country skied all day on frozen Lake Superior. Nobody had been out there yet - it was so cool, the snow was undisturbed and pristine. It was awesome!!
